Erik Schten, MD

Dr. Schten was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin.  He attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he completed his internship in internal medicine.  He then attended UC San Diego where he completed his residency in internal medicine, fellowships in geriatrics and health services research, and was on the clinical faculty for five years.  During that time, he earned his Masters of Public Health degree from San Diego State University.  

Upon relocating with his family to Marin in 2000, Dr. Schten took a position as a primary care provider with Marin Community Clinics (MCC). MCC is our local community clinic which treats underserved populations.  At that time, MCC patients had limited access to dermatological services. Seeing that need in the community encouraged him to train in the discipline.  He undertook intensive training and mentorship with a well-known local dermatologic maven and UCSF associate professor of dermatology – Dr. Joseph Greenberg.

For the past 25 years, Dr. Schten has continued to divide his medical dermatology practice between Dr. Greenberg’s office and MCC to serve all patients within our county.  He also holds the position of the Associate Medical Director for specialty services at MCC.  He is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Pacific Dermatologic Association. His focus is on medical dermatology including the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, and the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne to name a few.

Dr. Schten’s professional philosophy is to provide excellent, compassionate care to patients regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or economic status.  He derives great joy from caring for diverse populations as he feels each brings a richness of backgrounds and experience.   He and his spouse raised their three children in Marin County where they make the most of what this beautiful area has to offer – biking, swimming and hiking with their family dog.  He also enjoys reading and listening to live music.
